– John Harris, quoting Dr. Gary Small

I’m no Luddite—nobody has to convince me of the inventive awesomeness of modern technology—but I do think it’s true that we are just beginning to discover all the subtle changes in human interaction prompted by the online evolution.

U.S. Religious Knowledge Quiz →
I got 15/15! Boo-yeah. But knowledge of history and world cultures helps out more in this quiz than religious knowledge.

wealth vs income
zigziggityzoo:
So:
1. The top 1% also take in 42.7% of all income
The richest 1% have 42.7% of wealth, not annual income; each year they pull in much less than that (wealth includes assets that are still around year-to-year). The rich definitely pay a lot more, per dollar, in taxes.

Latest data from the IRS on Federal Income Tax as...
The top 1 percent pay over 40 percent of all income tax.
The top 5 percent pay over 60…
The top 10 percent pay over 71…
The top 25 percent pay over 86…
The top 50 percent pay over 97…
The bottom 40 percent pay 0
Sounds pretty progressive to me.
Note that the poorest 40% of employed Americans pay no income tax but still get to vote on tax hikes for everyone else.

thefrogman replied to your photo: EXACTLY This is why Star Trek would pwn Star Wars
Ah yes, but the Death Star could blow up the Enterprise. And a Jedi in hand to hand combat with a Starfleet Officer?
Oh, without a doubt Picard is going down in these two scenarios. And if Darth Vader were involved. And and in a hyperspace vs warp race.
But Enterprise on Executor, phasers vs blasters, the good...

previousmuscarella asked: Hey davereed. I follow you on google reader and really enjoy your stuff. Definitely done a lot of reblogging. Might have screwed up citations in the early days, but I'm on top of it now. I only follow trashy, addictive stuff I don't care about on my dashboard. What are the pros/cons of following with the dashboard?

Why Does Spicy Food Taste Hot? →
It turns out that capsaicin – the active ingredient in spicy food – binds to a special class of vanilloid receptor inside our mouth called VR1 receptors. After capsaicin binds to these receptors, the sensory neuron is depolarized, and it sends along a signal indicating the presence of spicy stimuli. But here’s the strange part: VR1 receptors weren’t designed to detect capsaicin. They bind spicy...
